All about Tea from Taiwan

Osmanthus is the name of a plant that is a popular street tree in China and Taiwan. It is also called "aromatic olive". It is an evergreen flowering shrub with fragrant flowers that are often used in herbal medicine, confectionery, and tea flavorings.

Tael (兩) - what is it?

A lot of people wonder, why oolong packages, especially expensive, have so unusual weight - 37,5g or 56,25g. At first sight it seems, that such kind of weight doesn't have any sense and more easy offer standard European packages, divisible by 30 or 50 g, or use ounces (28,35g), which are used in USA. But in fact, 37,5g is neither more nor less than 1 tael - Chinese measure of weight, which is used very widely up to now in traditional Chinese medicine and tea trading.

What is special about black tea from Taiwan?

Black tea lovers sooner or later want to know what Taiwanese black teas are like and what makes them special? For example, Indian teas are often considered strong and astringent, while Chinese teas tend to be sweeter and have notes of cocoa or caramel.

Leaf structure in tea

The ideal leaf structure for hand-picked tea is 2-3 leaves, a bud and a stem. When tea is harvested by hand, farmers can choose the ideal part of the plant that is most suitable for high-quality brewing, and usually these are the new growth of the tea bush (2-3 leaves, bud and stem).

Tea houses

Teahouses have become a distinctive part of Taiwan's culture. People go for the ambience and to have a good cup of tea.

You can find teahouses all over the island. Spending a few hours in pleasant surroundings over a pot of best oolong tea is as easy and every bit as fashionable as finding a cup of coffee in one of the popular coffee shops. Some people go to teahouses for tea, others go just for the ambience.

How to store tea

Tea is organic product without any preservatives, colorants and flavors. That’s why tea, as any other food, tea has it’s own storage recommendations. How keep freshness and taste of the tea?

Tea Harvesting Timeline (seasonality in tea)

Tea quality and taste depends not only on tea region, right brewing method, but also on season of growing and harvesting.

Different seasons give different tea taste and also depends on weather conditions during certain season certain year (temperature, rains frequency), tea taste could also vary.

Oolong Names in Taiwan: Varieties, Regions, and Styles

Every variety of tea comes from the same Camellia Sinensis plant. Of course, there are different varieties of this plant, but the difference between green tea, oolong tea, and black tea lies in the processing method used after harvest. As for the taste of oolong tea the important factors are growing height, variety, harvesting method, oxidation and roasting, the seasons and the weather in a particular year also matter.
